Part 2 - James 2:5-7
James 2:5-7.
Big Idea: God has always chosen the people the world overlooks. And a church truly transformed by that truth will honor who He honors — and become like who He became.
Points:
1. Honoring the poor
2. Becoming like the poor
Prophetic Thought: Most of us would never say we treat some church members as more valuable than others — but if we are honest, it shows up in who gets celebrated, who gets checked on, and who quietly slips through the cracks inside our own church community. James is not calling us to a generalized compassion toward the poor — he is calling us to examine how we treat the brother and sister sitting next to us who are struggling or overlooked. And here is what makes this passage so convicting — James is not just calling us to serve them, he is saying we have something to receive from them.
Application: This week, look around your own church community and identify one person who is struggling that you have been walking past — and move toward them intentionally. For the leader, it means sitting with the overlooked member not to fix their situation, but to learn from their faith, their dependence on God, and their trust in ways your comfort may never have required of you. For the congregation, it means recognizing that the brother or sister with the least in their hands may carry the most in their faith — and that a church fully transformed by the gospel is one where we are simultaneously serving each other and being shaped by each other.
