Title: Part 4-The power in the toungue
Big idea: As Christians, we need to seek Jesus to change every aspect of our lives, especially our words
Main Point: Determine to give your mouth to Jesus
Scripture: James 1:26 ESV
Car ride conversation: We cannot take back what comes from our mouth consider what you say, and is it worth saying? Do your words represent the heart of God?
Anchor Passage: James 1:21 NLT 21 So get rid of all the filth and evil in your lives, and humbly accept the word God has planted in your hearts, for it has the power to save your souls.
This message, UNSHACKLED: A Mouth Set Free, centers on Epistle of James 1:26 and calls believers to fully surrender their speech to Jesus as part of a transformed life. While many appear free outwardly, an uncontrolled tongue reveals inward bondage, even as we remember there is no condemnation in Christ and we are called to live as a living sacrifice. Drawing from Acts of the Apostles 2, the sermon highlights that when the Holy Spirit came at Pentecost, He immediately impacted speech, showing that true spiritual transformation affects the tongue. Jesus teaches in Gospel of Luke 6:45 that our words flow from the heart, and Book of Proverbs 18:21 reminds us that our words carry the power of life and death. Because of this, we cannot fix our speech through effort alone—only Jesus can transform the heart, which in turn transforms our words. Therefore, believers must intentionally decide to surrender their mouth to Christ, building safeguards through discipline and dependence on the Holy Spirit. Practically, this means pausing before speaking, inviting the Spirit’s help daily, replacing harmful speech with life-giving words, and repenting quickly when we fail. Ultimately, if Jesus truly has our heart, we should care deeply about what we say, offering even our words to Him so they bring life and salvation to ourselves and others.
James 1:26 NLT 26 If anyone thinks he is religious and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his heart, this person's religion is worthless.
Romans 2:1-2 ESV 2 Therefore, you have no excuse, O man, every one of you who judges. For in passing judgment on another you condemn yourself, because you, the judge, practice the very same things. 2 We know that the judgment of God rightly falls on those who practice such things.
Luke 6:43-45 ESV 43 “For no good tree bears bad fruit, nor again does a bad tree bear good fruit, 44 for each tree is known by its own fruit. For figs are not gathered from thornbushes, nor are grapes picked from a bramble bush. 45 The good person out of the good treasure of his heart produces good, and the evil person out of his evil treasure produces evil, for out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.
Proverbs 18:21 ESV 21 Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruits.
Proverbs 4:23-25 ESV 23 Keep your heart with all vigilance, for from it flow the springs of life. 24 Put away from you crooked speech, and put devious talk far from you. 25 Let your eyes look directly forward, and your gaze be straight before you.
Proverbs 25:28 ESV 28 A man without self-control is like a city broken into and left without walls.
