Blessed
Christ uses the familiar word MAKARIOS to contrast the striving for a subjective feeling of happiness, with the objective result of being blessed by God. In the midst of social and economic turmoil today, people are searching for, or redefining, “happiness”. Jesus counters a superficial infatuation with ‘success & happiness’ by presenting a mindset shift called the Beatitudes. He turns the idea of being “blessed” upside down. Not to be confused with ‘practical advice for successful living’ for ‘everybody’, nor ‘entrance requirements’ for ‘outsiders’, these are prophetic declarations about the posture and lifestyle of those who have encountered God.
As Christians we must model the grace we ourselves have been given. As Christians we must extend to others, and especially the marginalized, the love and compassion we have received from Christ. As Christians, we must be eternally satisfied with being blessed by God, rather than striving for a “feeling” or anything subjective to measure our current state of being.
